Mexico signs for unmanned Dominators

26 February, 2014 BY: Arie Egozi Tel Aviv

Aeronautics has signed a contract to supply two Dominator XP unmanned air systems to the armed forces of Mexico.

Based on Diamond Aircraft's twin-engined DA42, the Dominator XP has a flight endurance of 28h and is capable of carrying a 300kg (660lb) payload. The modified aircraft can be flown to an altitude of up to 30,000ft (9,150m) and has a top speed of 190kt (351km/h).

A first export sale of the type was made in mid-2011, shortly after Aeronautics had secured clearance from Israel's defence ministry. One Dominator XP is currently operated by CAE in Alma, Quebec, and is being used to support Project "Miskam", which is aimed at evaluating the use of UAS in civil airspace.

The reported new sale to Mexico follows a recent marketing effort to offer the converted aircraft with a variety of payloads. Aeronautics declines to comment on the matter.

As recently reported by Flightglobal, Aeronautics is currently evaluating the conversion of additional manned aircraft types for unmanned operations.

YAVNE, Israel, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Israeli defense contractor Aeronautics Ltd. is flight testing its Dominator XP unmanned aerial vehicle in Mexico, which has purchased the system.

The Dominator XP is a medium-altitude long-endurance aircraft for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions and is based on the DA-42 twin star, an Austrian commercial plane.

It has a length of 28.3 feet, a maximum speed of 219 miles per hour and a service ceiling of 30,000 feet. Endurance is 28 hours with a 900 pound payload,

Mexico is the first customer for the system, which first took to the air in 2009.

"The dominator is the highlight of Aeronautics development in the recent years," said Amos Mathan, Aeronautics' chied executive officer. "Taking a civil aircraft and transforming it into UAS allows the operators to enjoy all the benefits of a large UAS in an affordable price and with exceptional reliability.

"This is the first contract in which we export the UAS instead of renting it to the costumer, and I have no doubt that after the implementation of the system in Mexico we will soon market the dominator to other countries as well."

Mexico bought the system through Balam Security, a Mexican marketing firm.

Aeronautics sold its Dominator XP UAV long-range system for intelligence missions to Mexico

Yavne-based security company Aeronautics today reported that it had sold its Dominator XP UAV long-range system for intelligence missions to Mexico. The company did not state the price for the deal, but defense market sources estimated it at $20-30 million. Aeronautics develops and manufactures intelligence systems and UAVs.

This is Aeronautics first sale of the Dominator XP; up until now, it has used the system to provide services to various customers around the world. Israeli marketing company Balaam Security mediated the deal between Aeronautics and the Mexican authorities. The deal was signed six months ago, but is being revealed only now with the delivery of the systems to the security authorities in Mexico.

The Dominator XP is based on the manned twin-engine DA-42 developed in Austria. Aeronautics says that because it is a civilian plane converted into a UAV in recent years, it is more reliable and has lower maintenance costs than other UAVs. The plane has advanced avionics, and is designed for a range of military uses, due to its ability to carry advanced technology systems, including those used to collect intelligence.

"This is the showcase of Aeronautics' developments in recent years," said Aeronautics CEO Amos Matan. "The deal with Mexico is the first in which we are exporting the UAV, not just leasing it, and I have no doubt that after it is installed in Mexico, we'll market it in other countries."

Aeronautics is controlled by the KCPS, Viola Private Equity, and Bereshit funds. Efforts have been made in recent months to sell the company to a strategic investor.

Aeronautics’ Dominator XP, converted from a civilian craft, can fly at 27,000 feet and carry heavy equipment and specialized sensors.

Israeli security company Aeronautics sold its largest unmanned system, the Dominator XP, to the Mexican government. The new UAV can carry hundreds of kilos of equipment, specialized sensors, and cameras. It can fly at an altitude of 27,000 feet and reach Iran from Israel.

Its operating costs are especially low at only $360 per flight hour. The UAV can also be used for civilian purposes like following icebergs in the North Pole and monitoring oil installations and offshore gas rigs using advanced applications

Before the recent sale to Mexico, mediated by local marketing firm Balam Security, the system had been rented to a variety of customers around the world, including Canada and Turkey.

The Dominator’s unique selling points like its high safety rating, its relatively low maintenance costs, and its low price are due to the system’s conversion from an ordinary civilian plane, the Austrian Diamond DA42.

Dominator MALE UAV, Israel

The Dominator is a medium-altitude and long-endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), designed and manufactured by Israel-based Aeronautics Defence Systems to meet the requirements of Israel Defence Forces (IDF). Developed from the Austrian Diamond DA42 aircraft, the Dominator UAV executes intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISP) operations.

Flying at a maximum altitude of 30,000ft, the Dominator captures real time data by executing surveillance and reconnaissance missions over a large area. The data captured by the UAV is transferred to the ground control station (GCS) through a satellite communication line of sight data link. The UAV has accomplished 360,000 flight hours to date.

Boeing signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Aeronautics Defence Systems, at the Farnborough Air Show held in July 2010, to market the Dominator UAV.
Dominator unmanned aerial vehicle design

The Dominator is designed to operate even in adverse climatic conditions. Its design complies with the missile technology control regime (MTCR).

The UAV has a commercial off-the-shelf airframe of all-composite construction which renders durability, reduces maintenance and enhances mission endurance. A three-bladed propeller is fitted on either side of the craft. An antenna is fitted on the top of the fuselage section for satellite communications.
"The Dominator captures real time data by executing surveillance and reconnaissance missions over a large area."
Development

Aeronautics Defence Systems developed two Dominator prototypes. The first prototype was introduced in 2005 in Israel. The development of the second prototype, Dominator II, was announced in February 2008.

The Dominator was showcased in the Paris Air Show held in June 2009. Powered by two Thielert diesel engines, the Dominator II took its maiden flight in July 2009 at Southern Israel.
Dominator UAV features

The Dominator features a standard anti-icing system, identification friend or foe (IFF) system, UMASTM avionics suite, self-monitoring system, a thermal imaging camera, a new broadcast quality colour daylight camera, UMAS automated flight control system (AFCS) and brakes systems.

It is equipped with automatic take-off and landing (ATOL) system which aids in executing ISR missions without the intervention of the ground control station operator. An electro-optic camera is fitted beneath the front fuselage section to capture battlefield imagery or videos.
Navigation

The Dominator UAV can be controlled either manually from the ground control station or through autonomous mode. It is incorporated with a fully automatic launch and recovery (ALR) system which aids in automatic safe landing during communication failure with the GCS.
Sensors

The UAV is fitted with a versatile sensor suite which includes electro-optic sensors and infrared sensors. The EO sensor converts light rays into electronic signals for capturing real imagery and battlefield videos.
Radars

The Dominator is equipped with synthetic aperture radar (SAR), signal intelligence (SIGINT), communication intelligence (COMINT) and laser range finder.
Engines

The Dominator is powered by two Centurion 2.0 diesel engines, each of which produces 135hp (100kW) of output power. The Centurion 2.0 is a four-stroke diesel engine certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in October 2006.
"Aeronautics Defence Systems developed two Dominator prototypes."

It is fitted with wet sump oil systems, a three bladed MT-propeller with hydraulic pitch controller and reduction gear box. Thielert Aircraft Engines is the prime contractor involved in the production of the engines.

A full authority digital engine control (FADEC) incorporated in the engine facilitates automated missions. Both kerosene and diesel in any mixture ratio can be used as the fuel.

The width and depth of the engine are 0.79m and 0.8m respectively. The height is 0.63m. The dry weight is 134kg.
Ground control station

The real-time data captured by the Dominator is retrieved, processed, stored and monitored at the ground control station (GCS). Communication between the GCS and Dominator takes place through a line of sight data link up to 300km range. The GCS is designed and manufactured by Aeronautics Defence Systems.
Performance

The Dominator can fly at a maximum speed of 354km/h. The range and service ceiling are 300km and 9,100m respectively. The UAV can loiter in air for a maximum of 28 hours.

Adquiere Gobierno 5 'guardianes' aéreos

Los aviones DA 42 MPP Guardian brindan visión nocturna de precisión, localización de objetivos específicos y "avanzadas" silenciosas. Foto: Tomada de diamond-air.at

Antonio Baranda
